<image:title>Blog - Pessaries & their Role in Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy - A pelvic floor physical therapist can determine from their initial evaluation whether or not a patient is a candidate for a pessary. If they are a candidate, the pelvic floor physical therapist will perform a separate assessment to fit the pessary. During this assessment, there is a more detailed examination of the pelvic floor musculature and the position of the pelvic organs and this is how the size and shape of the pessary is determined. A properly fit pessary can often play a vital role in helping patients succeed in their treatment plan!</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Pessaries & their Role in Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy - Pessary use may be beneficial to many patients during pelvic floor physical therapy, offering patients relief from symptoms of pelvic organ prolapse while allowing for effective rehabilitation of the pelvic floor muscles! When used in combination with targeted exercises and lifestyle modifications, a pessary can help improve quality of life, reduce symptoms, and promote long-term pelvic health. If you’re experiencing vaginal heaviness, urinary leakage, difficulty emptying the bowel/bladder, or other symptoms of prolapse, consider speaking with a pelvic floor physical therapist to determine if a pessary could enhance your individual treatment plan.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - 5 Myths About Pelvic PT - Myth: We always perform an internal vaginal assessment.</image:title>
<image:caption>While this is commonly our go to exam for assessing pelvic floor muscle function, it is not the only thing we do. First of all, we need to make sure you are okay with this, and we will not do one if you are not comfortable with it. You always have a say in your healthcare treatment! We have EMG biofeedback and real time ultrasound imaging, which are other tools for us to assess your pelvic floor. We also look at your body as a whole, assessing movement patterns and strength of your hips and core. These factors can also influence pelvic floor function and give us an idea of how to plan your treatment.</image:caption>

We see patients who have gone through pregnancy and postpartum recovery, patients who have never been pregnant, and patients at different ages and phases of their life. Just because you haven’t birthed any babies does not make you immune to pelvic floor dysfunction!</image:caption>

I have worked with many postpartum clients who have started running or weightlifting way too soon while others have not exercised in so long due to fear of making anything worse. <image:title>Blog - Exercise and Pregnancy</image:title>
<image:caption>Many women wonder if they can exercise during pregnancy and if so, what is considered safe. The answer is women can and should exercise as they are able to whether it is aerobic activity or strength training! According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, exercising during pregnancy is correlated with higher rates of vaginal births and lower rates of excessive gestational weight gain, gestational diabetes mellitus, gestational hypertension, preterm birth, Cesarean birth, and lower birth weight. However, if you are new to having an exercise routine, have a complicating medical or obstetric condition, or are having pain please consult with a doctor and a pelvic floor physical therapist for further guidance.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Bowel Dysfunction and How Pelvic Physical Therapy Can Help - It is funny how we all enjoy “potty humor,” but it is still so difficult to discuss what is happening with our bladder and bowel habits. So often women apologize over and over again when they come into my clinic looking for help with bowel disorders. I think they apologize due to embarrassment or shame because it is so “taboo” or uncomfortable to discuss our stool. As a pelvic health PT I have a special love for discussing “poop” and its connected parts because I know how hard it is for people to admit this problem and seek help.</image:title>

      <image:title>Other Conditions - Pelvic Health Physical Therapy</image:title>
<image:caption>What is pelvic health or “pelvic floor” physical therapy? It is a specialty practice within physical therapy that targets our pelvic floor, or pelvic diaphragm. The “pelvic floor” is a system of muscles, fascia, tendons and nerves. Because it adapts and changes with movement and impacts our daily function, it’s part of the scope of a physical therapist. A pelvic health physical therapist can utilize exercise and deliver manual therapy to influence it like other neuromuscular systems in the body. The pelvic floor of our body is a busy place! It is integral in maintaining the continence of our urine or stool, prominent in sexual function and reproduction, works with our diaphragm in respiration and supports our organs as we move through our environment. Our pelvic floor muscles have an emotional memory as well making it difficult to talk about problems in that area, like pelvic pain, trauma, urinary or fecal issues. Our highly trained clinicians understand this and are experts in building trust and helping patients to feel comfortable. The initial evaluation consists of assessing your medical history and explaining how pelvic floor physical therapy can help. Your therapist will give you detailed information about pelvic anatomy and physiology at your first visit to help you understand the connection of the pelvic floor to your impairment. We know most of our patients are new to this type of therapy and our therapists will respect your boundaries and work with you in partnership at a pace that allows you to feel comfortable. Our therapists are excellent at listening to your concerns! Each pelvic health patient receives 1 hour of one-on-one, personalized care with her physical therapist. Throughout your plan of care, you and your therapist will decide together what is right for you based on your condition and your comfort level.</image:caption>
